Data from a recent analysis by Stephen Follows, featured on The Town podcast, indicates a shift in the duration of theatrical films. The researcher examined the running times of tens of thousands of movies released between 1980 and 2025.

While the overall average film length has remained stable for decades, a significant change is evident for wide theatrical releases. For such movies, the average runtime was approximately 106 minutes during the 1990s and early 2000s. In the current decade, that average has increased to 114 minutes, marking an extension of roughly ten minutes compared to twenty years ago.

The proportion of major releases shorter than 90 minutes has also declined sharply over the last forty years. In the 1980s, about thirteen percent of wide releases fell under that threshold, a figure that has decreased to seven percent in the 2020s.

Action films are a primary contributor to this trend, now averaging 128 minutes in length. Films with very large budgets also tend to be longer. Furthermore, the duration of pre-show advertising and trailers has grown, now typically occupying twenty to thirty minutes before a feature begins.

Several prominent film series illustrate this pattern. For instance, the runtime of Indiana Jones adventures grew from 115 minutes for the first film to 154 minutes for the most recent. Similarly, the Mission: Impossible series expanded from 110 minutes for its initial entry to 170 minutes for its latest installment. The James Bond franchise also reached its longest runtime with a recent film lasting 163 minutes.

Recent box office successes and award-winning films, including Project Hail Mary, One Battle After Another, and Oppenheimer, have also featured extended runtimes ranging from 156 to 180 minutes.
